چکیده

Introduction This paper describes the preparation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by the chemisorption of alkanethiols (HS(CHz),R) on surfaces of copper and silver. Both of these metal surfaces are highly active in the chemisorption of organosulfur compounds.H They offer an excellent opportunitl to study the influences of the substrate in def rning and controlling the order of self-assembled monolayer films. A central objective of this study was to compare the structures of the monolayers formed on silver and copper with those formed by chemisorption of alkanethiols on Bold.r-rr The molecular orientation and ordering of long-chain alkyl thiolate monolayers on gold reflects the epitaxial bonding of the sulfur atoms (or, perhaps more precisely, of gold thiolates) to the surface lattice plane. For long-chain alkyl disulfides and thiols chemisorbed on Au( I l I ) (the preferred crystallographic texture of typical polycrystalline samples), electron diffraction (TEM and LEED)r0 has established that the sulfur atoms in the adsorbates form (V3 x y'3)R30' werlaycn. This epitaxialoverlayer results in an interchain spacing of 4.99 A and is well suited to the formation of close-packed, and therefore ordered, organic surface phases when the alkyl chain is long (n > 15) and the R group roughly commensurate in size with the polymethylene chain.ll'12 Several recent studies discuss these issues.?-13 Copper, silver, and gold have nearest neighbor spacings in the ( l l l ) p lane o f 2 .56 A, 2 .89 A, and 2 .88 A, respec t ive ly . ra I f structures form on copper and silver that are analogous to those on gold (i.e., (y'3 x /3)R30o), we expect the molecular orien-

The interface structure of n-alkylthiolate self-assembled monolayers on coinage metal surfaces.

The current state of understanding of the structure of the metal/thiolate interface of n-alkylthiolate 'self-assembled monolayers' (SAMs) on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) is reviewed. On Cu(111) and Ag(111) there is now clear evidence that adsorbate-induced reconstruction of the outermost metal layer occurs to a less atomically-dense structure, with the S head-group atom bonded to four-fold and ...

Effect of Substrate Morphology on the Odd-Even Effect in Hydrophobicity of Self-Assembled Monolayers.

Surface roughness, often captured through root-mean-square roughness (Rrms), has been shown to impact the quality of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on coinage metals. Understanding the effect of roughness on hydrophobicity of SAMs, however, is complicated by the odd-even effect-a zigzag oscillation in contact angles with changes in molecular length. We recently showed that for surfaces...

The Effect of Coinage Transition Metal (Cu, Ag, Au) Substitutions on Two-electron Redox Potential of Quinones

Quinones are a class of compounds which have widespread importance in chemistry, biology and medicine. Because of their appropriate performance in electron transferring rate, quinones are among the most applicable mediators in biosensors. Recently, the effects of different non-metal substitutions on redox potential of quinone have been investigated to design suitable mediators for different ele...

Current understanding of the structure, phase transitions and dynamics of self-assembled monolayers on two- and three-dimensional surfaces

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been the preferred material systems to investigate specific properties in several disciplines for nearly 15 years. Advances in various techniques and their application to the study of SAMs have dramatically improved our understanding of these systems. Adaptation of this molecular architecture into three dimensions in the form of monolayer-protected clusters...
